Catherine Grinstead

Medical Director
Veterinary School: University of California, Davis

Dr. Cathy Grinstead graduated from the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She completed her internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in 1997, and has remained with us since then as a general practitioner.

Dr. Grinstead enjoys hiking, camping, running, and backpacking with her husband Jim. She also likes to garden and read, and to spend time with her dogs Whitney and Luna, and cats Spider and Cricket.

James F. Biggart III

Veterinary Specialist
Board Certification: American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Veterinary School: Texas A&M University
Graduate School: Colorado State University

Dr. Biggart is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons since 1977, and joined VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in 2003. In addition to his extensive surgical experience, he has authored more than a dozen articles in his field, which have been published in a variety of respected veterinary references and journals. He has also served as the President for both the Association of Certified Veterinary Medical Specialists and for the Association for Veterinary Orthopedic Research. Dr. Biggart received his DVM degree at Texas A&M University and his Master of Science from Colorado State University.

Jill Mikovich

Associate Veterinarian
Veterinary School: University of California, Davis

Dr. Jill Mikovich graduated from the University of California Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. During her veterinary training, Dr. Mikovich participated in research on feline infectious disease. After graduation she worked at the Atlantic Street Emergency Clinic as an emergency care veterinarian. Dr. Mikovich joined the VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in April 2007. Dr. Mikovich provides consultations for both dogs and cats; however, she is especially fond of cats.

Dr. Mikovich enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends including her dogs Spinner and Bailey, and cats Anastasia, Maxwell, Ernie, Bert, and Sasha.

Karen Hume-Smith

Associate Veterinarian
Veterinary School: University of California, Davis

Dr. Karen Hume-Smith grew up in Seattle, Washington. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis in 2010. During her veterinary training, Dr. Hume-Smith participated in research on feline ophthalmology. After graduation she completed a one-year rotating small animal internship at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center. Dr. Hume-Smith joined VCA Sacramento Animal Medical Group in August of 2011.

During her free time she enjoys outdoor activities such as snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting, and traveling with her husband.

Kendra O'Connor

Associate Veterinarian
Veterinary School: Iowa State University

Dr. Kendra O'Connor grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State University with a BS degree in Zoology, and continued at Iowa State University to complete her DVM degree. She then completed a rotating internship at VCA Sacramento Veterinary Referral Center before joining Sacramento Animal Medical Group. In her free time, she loves to play soccer, snowboard, spend time with her Boarder Collie Salera, and enjoy the California sunshine. She also continues to root for her alma mater in all sporting events - Go Cyclones!

William Garfield

Associate Veterinarian
Veterinary School: Louisiana State University

Dr. Garfield graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. He practiced in Louisiana for two years before relocating to southern California where he spent the next nine years in private practice. In 1991 he bought Carmichael Animal Hospital, which he owned and operated as a one doctor practice until 2009, when he sold his practice to VCA and began practicing at Sacramento Animal Medical Group. He enjoys both medicine and surgery. His wife Susan and daughter Emily keep him busy in his spare time. They have two cats and one dog. Hobbies include bicycle and motorcycle riding.
