Calvin G. Lum DVM
Calvin G. Lum DVM

Dr. Calvin G. Lum, a home grown San Francisco native, was awarded the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California at Davis in 1987.

As a young child, he developed a strong curiosity and love for animals. His growing interests in teaching, biology and physiology, led him on a natural course to a career in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Lum completed his double baccalaureates in Zoology and the Biology of Natural Resources at the University of California at Berkeley. Upon receiving his DVM, at UCDavis in 1987, he completed an informal internship at a small animal practice in Los Gatos, CA. He then spent 10 years in a small animal practice on the Penisula, in Redwood City, CA. Missing his hometown, he relocated back here to the City by the bay in 1988, where he practiced for 5 years in Laurel Heights, and then 4 years in Diamond Heights, before embarking on his new adventure, San Francisco Veterinary Housecalls, Inc.
He shares his original childhood home with his 2 cats: Rudy, the beautiful blue-eyed, flame point 9 year old DMH cat; and Rocket, the sleek, green-eyed, gray 7 year old DSH cat, rescued from the dumpster. They keep him entertained, while he enjoys life back home here, with his family, friends, the restaurants, the sites, the theatre, previous taiko drumming, and all this beautiful city has to offer.

After enjoying practice as an associate in 3 main brick and mortar veterinary hospitals in the Bay Area, the past 20 years, he decided to open this housecall practice to be able to offer the pet lovers of San Francisco additional options for the care of their loved ones. With 2 cats of his own, he knows how stressful it can be to pack them up into the carriers and lug them to the hospital, whether by car, public transportation or even walking...meow,meow, meow, meow, meow !!!!!, right?
He'll miss some of the procedures, like surgery, dentistry's, etc., but will be able to refer out as needed. He will still be able to do what he likes best, which is to teach, and now will have more time to do it, in the comfort of one's own home; educating owners about the medical care of their furry loved ones. He celebrates the importance that pets play in our lives and readily embraces the role of doctor as teacher.
