Gentle Care Animal Hospital was established in 1998 to serve the small animal veterinary care needs of clients in the Raleigh and Cary, NC area.

In recent years, the practice has strengthened its emphasis on preventative medicine and adopted a vaccine protocol based on the latest research shown to provide our pets with the best care available. Gentle Care Animal Hospital’s triangle of health approach to caring for pets includes taking steps to ensure the following:

These steps proactively help to improve pet health, quality of life. and increases longevity.

Darren L. Holman, D.V.M.
Darren L. Holman, D.V.M.

Dr. Darren L. Holman was born and grew up in Neenah, Wisconsin. His early life was spent on his parent's farm taking care of their numerous animals. He showed quarter horses on a nation level for many years but knew that he would eventually go to veterinary school. He attended Iowa State University and enrolled in the pre-veterinary medical program and graduated from veterinary school 1988. While in veterinary school, he was awarded the following national academic honors: Golden Keys, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Phi Zeta. In his junior year he was awarded the "Salisbury Scholarship" for superior scholarship, initiative, perseverance and potential for leadership. In his senior year he received the G.G. Graham Award or "Senior Clinician of the Year" based on scholarship, aptitude and general adaptability in clinical medicine.

Dr. Holman's diverse experience includes three years of general practice at a busy 7-doctor companion animal hospital and three years of small animal emergency medicine. He then practiced and helped manage a three-hospital group for five years in Columbus, Ohio while his "better half" Janice Andrews, finished a Ph.D. and residency at The Ohio State University. He is part owner of Gentle Care Animal Hospital and Preston Animal Hospital where he is engaged in small animal practice with an emphasis on internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. Hi special area of interest in internal medicine is fiber optic endoscopy. He is a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan who also enjoys computers, cooking, sailing and scuba diving. He is currently PADI certified Divemaster and in addition holds Advanced Open Water, Rescue and Nitrox certifications. He is also also an American Sailboat Association certified Keelboat, Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Cruising Catamaran Skipper. He lives in New Hill with Jan and their two dogs, Joonbug and Jitterbug.

Kate M. Mallo, D.V.M.
Kate M. Mallo, D.V.M.

Born and raised just outside of Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Mallo graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in marketing. After working overseas in pharmaceutical market research for two years, Dr. Mallo relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina in pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In 2003, Dr. Mallo graduated from the North Carolina Stat University College of Veterinary Medicine where she spent free time conducting research with loggerhead sea turtles and was inducted as a member of the Phi Zeta honor society. She joined Gentle Care Animal Hospital after graduation in May 2003. Her professional interests include soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and internal medicine.

Dr. Mallo currently lives in Raleigh with her daughter, Sara Jane, her dog, Mazy, and her cat, Mrs. Boogers. She has recently received her open water SCUBA certification and also enjoys downhill skiing, tennis, biking, horseback riding, and hiking.

Diona L. Krahn, D.V.M.
Diona L. Krahn, D.V.M.

Dr. Diona L. Krahn grew up nearby in Rockingham, NC. She graduated from Meredith College with a bachelors degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She then attended North Carolina College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated from there in 1998. Since her graduation, Dr Krahn has been providing care for small animals in the Cary/Apex area. During her years in practice, Dr. Krahn has obtained advanced training and experience in veterinary dentistry. She also has a special interest in endocrine disease. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and The American Veterinary Dental Society.

Outside of small animal practice, Dr. Krahn enjoys yoga, cycling, hiking, being outdoors and spending time with her family. The Krahn family includes Dr. Krahn and her husband, two young active boys - Xander and Cael, two cats - Bob and Abigail, and a Whippet named Cooper.

Jennifer Parker, D.V.M.
Jennifer Parker, D.V.M.

Dr. Jennifer Parker is originally from Columbia, SC. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Duke University and then attended the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 she practiced small animal medicine in Statesville, NC for 4 years. Dr. Parker then moved to Houston, Texas where she has worked for the last 5 years.

Dr. Parker recently relocated back to North Carolina and will join Gentle Care Animal Hospital in May 2009. She lives in Cary with her husband, Eric, two daughters, Caroline and Lauren, and two dogs, Jack and Georgia.
