Dr. Rene' A. Varela is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. Prior to veterinary school he completed a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences (Marine Biology) and a master's degree in Biology (Immunology). After veterinary school he completed two fellowships in Marine Mammal Research and Conservation at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, performed doctoral studies in Comparative Immunology, and completed a master in public health degree. His first 10 years in practice he worked almost exclusively in the field of marine mammal (dolphins, whales, manatees) health and environmental health, spending all of his time either in the water, on the beach, or in the lab throughout the world. His work on policy drew him closer to area of politics to such an extent that he even served as Mayor of his former city in south Florida (Lake Worth). He joined Banfield Pet Hospital nearly two years ago, making Maryland his home. Dr. Varela lives with his wife Tanya, 9 month old daughter Alessandra, 3 dogs (Puck, Wiglyn, Loki) and two 18 year old cats (Arlo and Norman) on a small quintessential Maryland farm. He loves fostering long-term relationships with clients and their beloved pets (whether they have fur, scales, slimy skin or feathers). His medical interests are in pathology, immunology, allergy, ultrasound, and preventative medicine. When Dr. Varela is not in the hospital, he is spending time with his family tending the farm, renovating the house, biking, visiting the local vineyard, and sampling the best of Maryland's locally produced foods.
